PHHS Disability Unit learn a new beat
On Wednesday 26 May, students in our Disability Unit were treated to a wonderful African drumming incursion by members of The Salaka Ensemble.
The Salaka Ensemble - who are from West Africa - immersed the students in the rich culture and rhythms of Africa through interactive drumming, singing, dancing and story-telling.
The show introduces students to an array of traditional African instruments of all shapes and sounds, including the ‘talking drum’, djembe drum, kpanlogo drum, box drum, bells and shakers.
As part of the incursion, all staff and students were able to participate in the performances with different instruments - and the result was very loud!

Experiencing African music in such a practical way and from authentic presenters helps to enrich our students understanding of other cultures.
The smiles on everyone's faces showed how much fun was had, and we look forward to welcoming Salaka back in the future!
